Is Coffee Different from Espresso Coffee?

Espresso is a type of Coffee, and with two billion daily cups drank, coffee is the most popular drink globally.

Coffee is so popular, versatile, and delicious that it exists in many versions.

There are four types of coffee beans:

Arabica Coffee

The most popular coffee bean in the world, with around 70 percent of the global market,  is a little sweeter and more smooth and flavored, and the coffee tends to be less acidic. Arabica beans are farmed in areas with plenty of rain. Brazil, known for its rainforest, is the world’s biggest exporter of Arabica. This coffee bean is prone to many diseases and needs extra care; that is why the cost is higher when compared with other types of beans.

Robusta Coffee

It is the second coffee bean globally and is the most popular in some European countries. It has a robust woody flavor compared with Arabica beans. It's more resistant to diseases, as caffeine acts as a natural repellent. This makes it easier to grow and harvest.

Besides the highest levels of caffeine, Robusta also offers more foam when preparing Espresso. High-quality varieties can make up 10 to 50 percent of  Italian-style espresso blends. Also is used as a filler and in some mass-market coffees for making instant coffee.

Liberica Coffee

Native to Central and Western Africa, Liberica beans are much rarer, and because this variety is not as popular as Arabica, Farmers have more difficulties scaling to a global market. It is known for its floral aroma and bold flavor.

Excelsa Coffee

For many, this fourth type of Coffee is now considered a variant of Liberica. It grows in Southeast Asia and combines light roast traits like tart and fruity flavors; also, it is lighter in aroma and caffeine.

Although there are four types of coffee beans, their taste is not restricted to their species; several factors can influence their flavor, including The farm’s region and altitude, the farm’s soil, and the roasting, grinding, or brewing method.

Although all coffee drinks are enjoyed because they are made from espresso, coffee can be altered to create a world of new flavors.

All these coffee drinks begin with one main ingredient: a double shot of Espresso. Ingredients can be added; however, the coffee-milk ratio is the main difference between coffee drinks.

The Coffee-Milk ratio:

If we take the three most popular coffee drinks, the flat white, the cappuccino, and the latte, you’ll notice the difference stays in the milk ratio.

What is a Cappuccino:

A cappuccino is made of three equal thirds. The coffee-to-milk ratio consists of 1:1:1, with the last ratio being milk foam.

What is a Latte:

A Latte is recognized for its silky-smooth texture and soft foam layer on top. This has been crafted to create a creamy flavor. A latte has a 1:3 coffee-to-milk ratio with a 1cm foam top served in a tall glass.

What is a Flat White:

A flat white is served in a smaller cup when compared to a latte. It has a coffee-to-milk ratio of 1:2, but the milk is treated differently to a cappuccino and latte. The steamed milk will have a micro-foam layer, unlike a cappuccino's stiff foam top, and will generally have half the milk of a latte for a more profound taste.

What is a Moka:

It is an espresso with chocolate.  This sweet coffee drink consists of a latte with chocolate syrup or cocoa powder added. If you like your coffee sweet, try adding caramel syrup. And add to top it with a dollop of whipped cream!

What is a Macchiato:

Consists of equal parts espresso and steamed milk. Similar to a latte and cappuccino, the macchiato contains far less milk. which gives the macchiato a bolder taste.

These simple but distinctly different ratios make the world of coffee so diverse and delicious. With so many options to choose from, there is sure to be a recipe that you love.
